The International Philosophy Olympiad is an annual competition that invites high school students from around the world to write original essays on philosophical topics. First held in 1993 in Smolyan, Bulgaria, the competition has grown to include participants from numerous countries. Students choose from one of four prescribed themes and have four hours to write their essays. The essays are evaluated based on relevance to the topic, philosophical understanding, argumentation, coherence, and originality. Winners are awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals, along with Honorable Mentions. This competition is a unique opportunity for students interested in philosophy to engage deeply with philosophical ideas and to gain international recognition for their thinking skills.
